The Frigidaires
The Frigidaires began their band to do one thing: cover The Ventures’ Christmas Album. Running a brisk 26 minutes in full, the initial set features holiday standards including “Sleigh Ride,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Silver Bells,” “Blue Christmas,” and more set atop rhythms of pop standards from the record’s release in 1965. As lifelong surf fans and players, the quintet found that the job came naturally. They were happy to fulfill the simple task yearly, clocking in for a few weeks a year, and then clocking out until the next year. Though playing The Ventures seasonally is a treat, they needed a new challenge a few years into their tenure. Starting rehearsals earlier one year, they learned The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album in its entirety, proving they are as deft vocally as they are instrumentally. The Frigidaires perform originals like “Little Saint Nick,” “The Man with All the Toys,” and “Merry Christmas, Baby,” alongside the reworked holiday standards that fill side two of the album. Performing both albums in full proves that The Frigidaires successfully tap into both sides of the surf coin: instrumental, reverb-laden melodies and sunny, sandy pop tunes grounded by strong vocal harmonies. The band rounds out their Christmas set with songs by Buck Owens, The Ramones, a song or two from The Nutcracker and a few other surprises. Past their seasonal endeavors, band writes and performs original surf instrumental and vocal songs. Their debut album, Play it Cool, is due early 2024 on Otitis Media Records.
